Creswell Crags Museum & Heritage Centre

Creswell Crags is located on the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire border. It is a beautiful place to visit and it is a site with special scientific interest. It is a limestone gorge that was formed many thousands, if not millions, of years ago.

What is there to do at Creswell Crags?

It’s dotted with caves and smaller fissures. They have found many animal bones in some of the caves plus evidence of early man. There is also evidence of woolly mammoths, rhinos, hippos, hyenas, lions and more. There’s even a cave that a witch used to live in.

It is free, to visit Creswell Crags, however, there are a couple of charges which I will mention below. There is a relatively new visitor centre with a museum. If you book one of their cave tours they have a few to choose from including a Life in the Ice Age cave tour, Witch Marks and Art in the Ice Age. It is best to enquire which tours of the most suitable for you.

Some of the tours are also weather-dependent. There is also an age limit of 5 years old. Children under 5 are not permitted on the tours. You have to wear a helmet for the tours and they are very interesting and well worth doing. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable.

There is a small playground outdoors. The walk around Creswell Crags is really beautiful with a big lake, caves and rocks on either side. The Ice Age visitor centre/museum shows a film of three different stages in the past at Creswell. The exhibition houses bones, skulls and artefacts that they have found on-site during excavations.

Is there food and drink available?

There is a cafe on-site selling hot and cold food and drinks. You are welcome to picnic around the playground outdoors.

Beautiful walk around a lake by rocks and caves, a visitor centre with a museum ., guided cave walks and a small playground. There are toilets, a shop and a cafe.

What are the ticket prices?

It is free to visit Creswell Crags. If you wish to go on any of their cave tours a combined ticket, including the museum costs £14.00 for an adult and £10.00 for a child.
